A light micrograph of a rat mesentery after exposure to intestinal ischemia/reperfusion. Both the arteriole (the round vessel with no blood cells) and the venule (the elongate vessel with large numbers of RBCs and neutrophils) are apparent. The neutrophils are adherent to the venular wall and migrating across the endothelial barrier and into the interstitium.
