Research Interest

The tripeptide, glutathione (GSH) plays an essential role in antioxidant defense, and, together with the pyridine nucleotide systems, maintains intracellular redox homeostasis that is critical for proper function of cellular proteins and cell signaling.

My research interest focuses on investigating two areas related to: 1) GSH redox mechanisms involved in modulation of mitochondrial function and in oxidant-induced mitochondrial apoptotic signaling and 2) role of pyridine nucleotides in mitochondrial function and detoxication pathways in response to oxidative challenge and altered glucose status. Studies will be performed with established intestinal cell lines and using molecular and biochemical techniques. A new direction of research will study the mechanisms of protection by phytochemicals against oxidative stress-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death.
