The Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology is equipped with the latest technology for physiological research, including resources that allow for experimentation at the whole animal, organ, isolated cell, and molecular levels. The laboratories of each faculty member have all of the specialized equipment that is needed to maintain nationally competitive programs in their respective research areas.
A variety of core facilities and instruments are available to all researchers in the department. These shared resources include: a cell culture core facility, which supplies human vascular endothelial cells to laboratories in Physiology, as well as to labs in the Departments of Urology, Rheumatology and Pulmonary Medicine. This facility also prepares microvascular endothelial cells from bovine, porcine and murine sources for different research projects.
The morphology/imaging core facility is equipped with a laser confocal microscope as well as equipment needed for routine histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.
The molecular biology/biochemistry core facility is equipped with spectrophotometers, preparative and ultra-centrifuges, HPLC, liquid scintillation and gamma counters, a gene gun, PCR machines, electroporators, DNA sequencing gel tanks, hybridization chambers, and includes a fully equipped darkroom with x-ray film developer. Additional specialized resources found in the department include a computer-driven graphic arts and slide making core, a ratio fluorescence spectrometer lab, and a high frequency transthoracic echocardiograph.
The department is particularly well equipped for intravital videomicroscopy, chronic animal studies, and research on the chemistry and biochemistry of reactive oxygen and nitrogen oxide species. The departmental research facilities are augmented by a machine shop facility for specialized instrument development, centralized administrative (purchasing, personnel, etc) services, and a conference room/library that is equipped with up-to-date audiovisual technology and holds a large number of physiological, biochemical, and medical journals. In addition, the Health Science Center's library subscribes to numerous scientific periodicals that are relevant to the research efforts of the department.
