Biography

Maureen N. Ajuebor assumed her present position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology in 2006.

Dr. Ajuebor is an author of over 20 articles in peer-review journals and 1 book chapter. She is an Ad-hoc reviewer for the “Journal of Leukocyte Biology”, “Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics” and the journal “Pharmacological Research”.  She is a member of the Society for Leukocyte Biology, American Association of Immunology and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Research

The Liver is home to an incredibly diverse population of immune cells [including natural killer cells, natural killer T (NKT) cells, Kupffer cells (resident macrophages) and conventional T (i.e. CD4+ and CD8+) cells] and non-immune cells (such as endothelial and stellate cells). This leads to a remarkable number of intercellular interactions in the liver. My laboratory is interested in defining how immune cell to immune cell interaction and immune cell to non immune cell interaction can influence the development of liver diseases. In addition, my laboratory aims to investigate how chemokines (chemotactic cytokines) modulate immune cell recruitment into the inflamed liver and also alter effector function of leukocytes during liver diseases. For the proposed studies, an animal model of viral hepatitis will be used. Iinformation obtained from these studies could help in the design of more effective therapeutic agents for viral liver diseases.
